Fishing on the Seal Beach Pier ….you may get lucky…and not catch any fish ?

A recent report (June  18) from  the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment has declared all the “coastal’ waters between the Santa Monica Pier and the Seal Beach Pier, a “red” zone; but the coastal waters from Santa Monica to Ventura and from San Clemente to Seal Beach are considered “yellow” areas.

What’s the difference between yellow and red zones?  The simple explanation is that in the yellow zones you can eat certain fishes twice a week and not be overly concerned about the effect it will have on your health, especially if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you are a child.  In the red zones most probably shouldn’t eat any of those fish. 

The main reason for the contamination of the fish would appear to be an area off the coast of Palos Verdes peninsula that is contaminated with thousands of tons of chemicals that were carried there by the sewers from various Los Angeles County communities for many years. There were significant amounts of PCB’s and DDT include in those pipes. Right now the federal government is working on making it a “super site”  clean-up area and the best suggestion on the table (at this time) is to cover it up with other cleaner sediment and then gradually clean it over the next several decades.  Needless to say many environmental groups disagree with that scenario.

The fish that should be avoided are many.  White croaker leads the list also shovelnose guitar fish, sardines, yellow fin croaker and sardines.  Women younger than 45; women pregnant or nursing, and children younger than 17  should not eat topsmelt, barred sand bass, and barracuda that are caught in the red zone.  All of the above should limit how much California halibut, California scorpionshish, most rockfishes and kelp bass  and local sardines to one serving a week.

 Why should fish be eaten if they might contain chemical contaminants? Fish are a nutritious source of protein and heart-healthy “omega-3” fatty acids.  That is why the American Heart Association recommends that healthy adults eat at least two 

3-ounce cooked servings of fish each week.  Eating fish may also prevent other diseases and improve how the brain develops in the fetus and children.  To benefit most from fish consumption and avoid health risks from contaminated fish, it is important to eat fish that are low in contaminants and high in the unique “omega-3” fatty acids found in fish.  

 Exposure to high levels of DDTs in the workplace or in accidental poisonings has been shown to affect the nervous system.  Studies in animals confirm these effects.  Like methylmercury and PCBs, lower levels of DDTs may affect the development of the nervous system in the fetus or children. DDTs may also affect reproduction. PCBs and DDTs have also been found to cause cancer in some animal studies.  As a result, the

state of California and the United States Environmental Protection Agency say that PCBs and DDTs probably can cause cancer in humans.

Fresh off a recent performance at the Sea Bee Days Festival at the Naval Base in Port Hueneme, CA Los Angeles-based country group BROKEDOWN CADILLAC will perform a special Fourth of July show at the Navy Golf Course in Cypress, CA as a Morale, Recreation and Welfare (MWR) event through the Naval Weapons Station in Seal Beach, California.

The band-fronted by singer CORRI ENGLISH and guitarist/songwriter RANDY DUNHAM-perform regularly around Los Angeles and were included in the last two issues of Country Weekly, including a review of their debut album Somewhere In America. “I have all kinds of family in the military, especially the Navy” says ENGLISH. “In fact, my sister Katie just got engaged to a great Navy guy herself, so we’re very excited about this show-it’s personal for us.”

BROKEDOWN CADILLAC made their national debut March 13 when they were seen performing in the #1 Walt Disney Pictures film Race To Witch Mountain in a honky-tonk bar scene (they also have five songs within the film and two on the digital soundtrack). The group-whose upbeat country rock blend is highlighted by CORRI’s forthright lead vocals and their shimmering harmonies-attended the 3/11 premiere of the film at Los Angeles’ El Capitan Theatre and performed at the premiere party.

Long Beach Gets The “Boot!”

If you read the recent articles about parking tickets and/or work or live in a parking congested area  in Long Beach then you know that parking tickets are a part of life in some areas.  

If you’re one of the people that have multiple unpaid tickets in your glovebox or an expired registration you better pay what’s due before you get the boot!

Per an article published in the Press Telegram, the City of Long Beach will be launching a vehicle booting program for residents who have more than 5 unpaid parking tickets or an expired vehicle registration.   Not sure what a boot is?  It’s a wheel locking mechanism that will disable your car until you pay the bill.

Even in bad times…here’s a good deal!

Every year, for the last 65 years, the Seal Beach Lions Club has had a fish fry to help the less fortunate in our community with proceeds going to benefit the sight and hearing impaired and other local community projects and charitable organizations.

Additionally, for the last 18 years, an automobile has been given away as well as exotic trips around the world  and gift certificates to local stores as well.  

The most important thing to know about this drawing is that only 500 tickets are sold.  Only 500!  That makes your chances of winning very, very good.

Dipsomaniacs and neighbors struggle in The Shore

Whoops!  Seems like all that moola brought to the city coffers by Belmont Shore bar patrons may not be enough to make up for their disturbances.

Neighbors in what is arguably Long Beach’s number one ritzy community complain of a little too much revelry late at night.  

They want more cops on the beat to keep the tavern patrons from using  their lawns as latrines and other late night sleep distractions.

Follow Up on the $250 million club post

#1 Draft pick, Matt Stafford signed with Detroit Lions for either 17 million  guaranteed,  or 41.7 million guaranteed. Based on what I’ve heard from insiders it was the 41.7 number.  That can easily go to  $78 million if he has an average first six years.  And if he can get Detroit to the playoffs in the first three or four years that contract will be re-written.  Even if General Motors has to contribute to do it.

Detroit is going all out to help Stafford because the Lions were a terrible team in 2009 as we all know.  They’ve brought in eleven free agents so far and six of those are on defense….so Matt will hopefully have a better chance to get rid of the ball than last’s year’s QB’s did.  Stafford is a great young man with a head that knows football.  Livernois and Grand River Ave aren’t Broadway…. that’s for sure … but Detroit is hungry for a hero and they’ll treat him like Bobby Layne if he gets the job done.

USC’s “Playboy” Mark Sanchez, as the tabloids have tagged him,  got $28 million guaranteed  and the total on that contract could easily exceed $50 mm  in the first 5 years.  If Mark does well and has a couple of blow out years you can bet your house the contract will be  renegotiated and it won’t be renegotiated down!  

Is he the playboy the internet says he is? I don’t think so.  He’s a good kid who just got all the money in the world and a heck of a stage to spend it on. New York, New York its a wonderful town…if you don’t let it down!

Now if he follows in Leinart’s tracks, which some want to say he might, he’ll still do well enough to stick around for the five years and he’ll have to get by on $50 “mil.”   Probably most readers are too young to remember Joe Namath coming to the NFL … with knees so bad there were questions if he’d even be able to play…yet he signed with the Jets for the UNHEARD OF PRICE of $400,000!  The biggest contract in NFL history at the time…and it turned out to be a great bargain for New York.

Well Sanchez signed for 12 ½ times as much as “Broadway Joe” and he already has more stories about girlfriends than Joe did in his entire career.  Joe had too much class to talk about all the girls. I’ve seen a few of Mark’s girlfriends and the #1 “hottie” is a ‘drop dead’ schoolteacher who works at Phil Trani’s restaurant in Long Beach. I’m told she still gets calls regularly from Sanchez.  (Not sure if she still picks up on those calls?}

So my $250 Million club has a total on the first two contracts, of the six guys in the photo, of  over $128 million. That’s on their ‘ORIGINAL’ signing contracts. Not too bad.

The other four outstanding players in that photo, all who opted not to go into the 2009 draft were: QB Chase Daniel, Missouri,  QB Bobby Reid, Texas Southern, QB Colt McCoy, Texas and USC’s #1 wide receiver Damian Williams, who will make this year’s Trojan QB, Aaron Corp look good all year.  Corp is so fleet afoot that it may cost Williams a few TD’s  but rest assured the pro scouts will see enough to insure him of an 8 figure contract in 2010. 

 

So you see why I still stand behind that “$250 Million Club”  estimate; heck it could go to $252 million maybe?
