Haley Ishimatsu has plenty of experience decorating floats for Pasadena’s annual Rose Parade, said her grandmother,  Cherry Ishimatsu.

“Many times, she told us what they were doing was putting (on) each petal at a time,” Cherry Ishimatsu said. “It was a family project.” But this year, Haley Ishimatsu will sit among the roses on New Year’s Day. The 17-year-old Seal Beach resident will ride on Kaiser Permanente’s float in the parade Friday.

“I’m actually really excited,” Ishimatsu said this week. “I’ve seen the parade several times from the sidelines, but I’ve never followed a float or been on one.”

Kaiser Permanente officials chose to feature Ishimatsu on the float alongside seven other young patients who are fighting various diseases and conditions.

“We’re looking for riders who demonstrate a real strength and commitment in dealing with their health issues,” Kaiser spokesman Calvin Naito said. “That shows they can overcome the adversity and still manage to do well in life.”

Ishimatsu has asthma, but she hasn’t let that stop her from succeeding in competitive diving. “Asthma for me isn’t really a factor because I’ve learned how to control it,” she said.

She competed in the Beijing Olympics last year and is already looking forward to London in 2012.

Toshi Kitahara, also grandmother of Haley  and Cherry said  “She’s more than good as far as a role model she’s excellent.

The grandmothers said they were unsure if they’d be able to attend the parade in person, but they planned to watch it with particular interest concentrating on one young woman.

How about “12 Cats for Christmas?”

Well we’re down to only 12 cats and/or kittens left!

That’s right, the Seal Beach Animal Care Center…arguably the best animal care adoption facility in the country...set out to have 77 of their temporary visitors placed in new homes by the end of the year and there are only 12 left and some of those are the most lovable of all.

The Seal Beach center is a shelter that does not put its animals “to sleep”  so, in tough times like we’re in now, they get a lot of animals that have been abandoned.

The center is offering all sorts of cut-rate prices and discounts to those who will adopt kitties with special needs.

A “adopter” has to be cleared before you can take your dog or cat home but once you are cleared you will get a gift card from one of several local stores including Costco, Wal-Mart, PetSmart, Petco and more.  In most cases the gift card will equal the fees paid for the adoption.  There are many, many adoptions completed the same day.  (They know once you see these cuddly little guys you want them to go home with you.)

All the animals will have been spayed or neutered.  They’ll have been de-wormed and had a microchip installed saying they belong to you.

Want to tighten up those wrinkles, get rid of a hangover, sweeten up your breath, shine your shoes or get rid of headache? Here’s your inexpensive and simple answer!

1.Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need  every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1,  Vitamin B2, Vitamin  B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid,  Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium & Zinc.

2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber.  Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower?  Rub a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing fragrance.

4. Grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place slices in a small pie tin and it will be free of  pests all season long.  The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

5. Looking for a fast and  easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool?  Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the photochemical in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite.  Works great on wrinkles too!!

6. Want to avoid a hangover or  terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free.  Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!

7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge?  Cucumbers have been used for  centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores

for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don’t have enough time to polish your shoes?  Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe,

its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!

10.  Stressed out and don’t have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa?  Cut up a cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

11. Just  finish a business lunch and realize you don’t have gum or mints?  Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the photochemical will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

12.  Looking for a ‘green’ way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel?  Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but it won’t leave streaks and won’t harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.

13. Using a pen and made a mistake?  Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!

Pass this along to everybody you know who is looking for better and safer ways to solve life’s everyday problems.

The “Gull Wing” is back…and its a hit!

The AMG division of Mercedes Benz has introduced the 2010 AMG SLS.  This beautiful beast compares favorably to Jack Haley’s original 1955, but you have to remember that car was a revelation over 50 years ago so a 2010 car should be more than a comparison.

Now Mercedes has not given us a chance to drive this $200,000 beauty (nor are they likely to) but I did drive the original and even though it was $188,000 less it was something else in its day.

If you’d like to see it being driven at Half Moon Bay and then at Laguna Seca go to: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-neil13-2009nov13,0,7051260.column

If one of our readers is lucky enough to own one, c’mon bye and take me for a ride….please !
