Fountain Valley Car Show at Mile Square
May 12, 2009 by Wilm (Edit) ?Filed under Local News
Saturday June 13 the Fountain Valley Classic Car and Truck Show is coming to Mile Square Park. This unique show has classic autos and trucks submitted by local collectors.
Pete Haak, show event coordinator said it is not too late to register, however, last year nearly 100 were turned away due to space limits on the day of the show.
They do have room for over 300 cars this year on two beautiful newly landscaped areas adjacent all grass soccer fields. If you haven’t yet registered, you still may do so if you act quickly. Haak says the first 300 registrants will receive a free color photograph, framed in a glass of their car. ??Some of the car clubs will be placed together if they arrive sequentially. The Early Ford V8 Club will be one of those clubs. A large collection of Ford Woodies is expected. The Early Ford V-8 members should meet at Denny’s Coffee Shop at Brookhurst and Edinger at 6:30 a.m. to enter as a group.
The Kiwanis Club will have pancake breakfasts available at Mile Square for a modest charge in the morning. There will also be several vendors with all kinds of wonderful lunch time foods, water, cold drinks, snacks and desserts.
This car show is part of a three day City of Fountain Valley annual Mile Square Park City Festival. There will be carnival rides at the park this year, so bring the kids. Live music will be featured throughout the festival as well. Additionally, there will be a real antique horse drawn steam fire engine on display. This will be an interesting event with lots of unique vehicles coming in that we don’t often get to see.
John Perrot is working on the finishing touches of a “new” 1934 Flathead Ford V8 Display Engine and it will very likely make its public debut at this show! The show organizers have dedicated a single car space to the display of the engine. Very few people outside of V-8 clubs and their inner circles know how interesting the real thing is until they see one up close As Henry Built It. This is an authentically assembled engine in a static display.

Looking for that perfect summer activity your kids will not only love but where they will learn important life skills as well? PREP Kitchen Essentials in Seal Beach CA launches their popular “Kids Cooking Camp” series starting Monday June 22nd with classes going through August 27th, 2009.Classes are offered for the age groups 5-8, 9-13, and Teens and run weekly, Mondays thru Thursdays, with morning and afternoon sessions. Classes are 100% participatory; kids make everything from scratch including pastas and sauces, salads and dressings, BBQs, sushi and much more. All recipes are made from whole food ingredients with nothing packaged, prepared or preserved. This year PREP added advanced classes to their schedule for returnees and kids who are already cooking meals at home. The price for all classes is $250.00 per week and includes all tools and equipment and a full meal.
“Our children’s cooking classes are designed to give young people hands-on, comprehensive cooking experience as well as exposure to a wide selection of ingredients, recipes, techniques and equipment”, says owner Lisa Dohner. PREP’s dynamic and fresh ingredient-based menus include items like “Sesame Noodles with Pea Shoos”, “Squash Ravioli with Browned Butter and Hazelnut Sauce” and “Pecan Sticky Buns.” “We don’t do Chicken Fingers, French Bread Pizzas, or Quesadillas. It’s a sophisticated yet casual and fun environment where kids gain the confidence to explore and enjoy cooking,” says Dohner.
PREP employs a full adult staff to supervise classes with a 3-to-1 kid-to-staff ratio. As class enrollment has already begun, Dohner encourages people to sign up early, as classes will sell out. For more details please visit

The Orange County League of Conservation Voters announced their annual dinner is scheduled for Thursday, May 14 at the University Club on the UCI campus. This year Nancy Donaven Past President of the Bolsa Chica Land Trust is receiving a Special Lifetime Environmental Achievement Award for her decades of work in protecting the environment.
Other honorees are Elizabeth Lambe, for her work in stopping the toll road extension. Jerry Collamer is also being recognized for his efforts along with the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association. Preventing the extension of this road was a huge environmental win this year and the board of the OCLCV thought it appropriate to recognize some of the leaders involved in the fight.
The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach is being recognized as the Environmental Non-Profit of the Year. They take in wild birds and mammals, which are all too often injured due to human activity. The work they do in healing injured and sick wild animals is truly commendable.
The recognition dinner is an important fundraiser for the OCLCV, which supports candidates for local office who share our concern for the health of our local environment.
For more information or to make a reservation contact Kathleen Shanfield at <kshanfield@aol.com> or call 714-270-1096 or call Linda Moon at 714-846- 2674 . Sponsorships are available.
“Earth Day” is also “Save Our Beach Day”

Comments Off on “Earth Day” is also “Save Our Beach Day”
Earth day is the day each year when beach residents are especially cognizant of what they can do to help the beaches and wetlands of our Southern California coast. Seal Beach, Long Beach and Huntington Beach folks come out in droves to do their bit.
Unfortunately our beach towns are the first stop for the trash that floats across the Pacific as if on an oceanic highway from China and Tokyo to the California coastline. Our beaches are also a dumping ground for everything that 8 million people in the L.A. basin toss into the storm drains near the Sierra Madre mountains and all the towns in between. That’s a lot of trash.
You’ll find that helping out even one day a year is therapy for the soul. You‘ll feel so good and set such an example for your children that you’ll be talking about it for months.
Go to either http://www.saveourbeach.org/ or http://www.bolsachicalandtrust.org and find out where you can meet this Saturday.
And don’t forget to write back and send a photo, or better yet, have your children write to us and tell us of their experience
