The American Kennel Club® and Eukanuba announced today that nearly 4,000 dogs will compete for more than $225,000 in cash prizes at the Ninth Annual AKC/Eukanuba National Championship on Dec. 12 and 13, 2009 in Long Beach, Calif. The two-day event is held in conjunction with the AKC Agility Invitational and the AKC National Obedience Invitational (entries of 457 and 109 respectively) making for a combined entry of almost 5,000 dogs competing in all events.
In celebration of AKC’s 125th anniversary, the show has adopted an open format for 2009 (it will return to invitation-only in 2010), which means any AKC registered purebred unaltered dog six months of age or older has an opportunity to compete for top dog honors.
“With our partners, we’re thrilled to host one of the most well-respected dog shows in the world and to be able to commemorate the AKC’s anniversary with the open format at this year’s AKC/Eukanuba National Championship,” said Jason Taylor, external relations manager, Procter & Gamble Pet Care. “Every year the road to best in show is full of suspense for owners, handlers and breeders and the open format allows for more surprises in the ring and opportunities for established champions and new contenders alike to make a run for the title of top dog.”
The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship is also host to the Eukanuba World Challenge, a unique event showcasing top canines from 41 countries all competing for prestigious international recognition. Rare breeds such as the Cesky Fousek, Thai Ridgeback and Bracco Italiano will compete against more traditional favorites such as the Doberman Pinscher, Poodle and Golden Retriever for the title of “World Challenge Champion” and a total of $15,000 in prize money.
“We are proud to celebrate AKC’s 125th anniversary with this unique show,” said Ron Menaker, show chairman. “With nearly 5,000 entries in the conformation, agility and obedience competitions, it’s the largest AKC dog show in 2009, and will be a memorable event for both spectators and competitors.”
HAPPENINGS AT THE AKC/EUKANUBA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
• Best in Show Competition – Because of this year’s open format, more dogs than ever will be competing for top dog honors including dogs who have never shown before and the country’s top show dogs from each of the 161 AKC recognized breeds. The owner of the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Best in Show winner will receive more than $50,000, and the breeder/s of the Best in Show winner will be awarded $15,000.
• AKC Agility Invitational – This year the invitational will be housed in 60,000 square foot pavilion adjacent to the Convention Center that is 39 feet tall and spans the length of a football field. Under the big top during the two-day show, the agility competition demonstrates the versatility and speed of canines as they race against the clock and overcome a challenging obstacle course of tunnels, weave poles, jumps and seesaws. It is a sport of physical skill, control, patience and most importantly, teamwork between handler and dog.
• AKC National Obedience Invitational – Obedience trials demonstrate how useful a dog is as a valued companion. Accuracy and precision are essential, but the natural movement of the handler and the willingness and enjoyment of the dog also are important.
• Eukanuba World Challenge – The international challenge will feature top dogs from 41 countries and six continents. Watch and cheer on Holly, the 2008 AENC Best in Show champion, as she represents the U.S. in this intense competition.
• Junior Handlers – Top-ranking preteen and teen handlers (ages 9-18), who have met high academic standards and qualification criteria based on year-round competition will compete for prestigious wins and scholarship money.
• AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE) – Each year dogs are recognized for their outstanding contributions to their respective communities. There are five categories the ACE Award recognizes: Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue, Therapy, Service and Exemplary Companion. These honorees and their owners will be on-hand in Long Beach to receive their awards and be recognized in front of the AENC audience.
• AKC Meet the Breeds® – Showcasing more than 150 breeds, with dogs of all ages, AKC Meet the Breeds is designed to teach responsible dog ownership while providing an interactive and fun experience for show attendees. Debuting at the event are some of the newest breeds recognized by the AKC – the Irish Red and White Setter, Norwegian Buhund and Pyrenean Shepherd.
• Dog Sensory Exhibit – The Eukanuba booth will feature a full-sensory exhibit where attendees can see, smell, hear and taste exactly as a dog does.

Well we’re down to only 12 cats and/or kittens left!
That’s right, the Seal Beach Animal Care Center…arguably the best animal care adoption facility in the country...set out to have 77 of their temporary visitors placed in new homes by the end of the year and there are only 12 left and some of those are the most lovable of all.
The Seal Beach center is a shelter that does not put its animals “to sleep” so, in tough times like we’re in now, they get a lot of animals that have been abandoned.
The center is offering all sorts of cut-rate prices and discounts to those who will adopt kitties with special needs.
A “adopter” has to be cleared before you can take your dog or cat home but once you are cleared you will get a gift card from one of several local stores including Costco, Wal-Mart, PetSmart, Petco and more. In most cases the gift card will equal the fees paid for the adoption. There are many, many adoptions completed the same day. (They know once you see these cuddly little guys you want them to go home with you.)
All the animals will have been spayed or neutered. They’ll have been de-wormed and had a microchip installed saying they belong to you.

The AMG division of Mercedes Benz has introduced the 2010 AMG SLS. This beautiful beast compares favorably to Jack Haley’s original 1955, but you have to remember that car was a revelation over 50 years ago so a 2010 car should be more than a comparison.
Now Mercedes has not given us a chance to drive this $200,000 beauty (nor are they likely to) but I did drive the original and even though it was $188,000 less it was something else in its day.
If you’d like to see it being driven at Half Moon Bay and then at Laguna Seca go to: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-neil13-2009nov13,0,7051260.column

This year’s new cars have some surprising mileage numbers. 8, 9, 10 and 11 miles to the gallon!
The EPA has released their annual fuel economy guide. There are lots of autos with greatly improved mileage. Alas, there are still a few that don’t seem to get the message or cannot improve their mileage number without compromising their goal?
A Chevy van that gets 13 mpg IS NOT the worst by any measure. Not surprisingly most of the cars with bad numbers seem to be aimed at an audience of Marie Antoniette’s …. Those with a sort of “Let ’em eat cake” attitude.
When discussing the 2010 mileage report EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said: “Every year, consumers use the Fuel Economy Guide to find clean, efficient, cost-effective vehicles that meets their needs and their budgets. It’s an easy, accessible resource for everyone, and helps us cut harmful pollution from the air, and save money for American drivers.”
Fuel-efficient models come in all types and sizes, so consumers can save thousands of dollars over a vehicle’s lifetime without sacrificing performance. Model year 2010 fuel economy leaders include a wide range of hybrid models, from compact cars to sport-utility vehicles. “Fuel economy is about both saving energy and saving money,” said Energy Secretary Steven Chu. “Buying fuel efficient vehicles – like the many hybrid technologies featured in this year’s Fuel Economy Guide – helps limit carbon pollution, lessen our dependence on foreign oil, and reduce driving costs for American families.”
Each vehicle listing in the Fuel Economy Guide provides an estimated annual fuel cost. The estimate is calculated based on the vehicle’s miles per gallon (mpg) rating and national estimates for annual mileage and fuel prices. The online version of the guide allows consumers to input their local gasoline prices and typical driving habits to receive a personalized fuel cost estimate.
Fuel efficiency is important for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change. One of the most important things consumers can do to reduce their contribution to climate change is to buy a vehicle with better fuel economy.
The Fuel Economy Guide continues to be available to mobile users (fueleconomy.gov/m), and is readily accessible from a mobile device, smart phone, or personal digital assistant (or PDA).

FINANCE
The Fiscal Services Division of the Finance Department website has recently been revised to add the following page www.surfcity-hb.org/utilityupdates. This revision will allow customers to update the contact information on their water bill accounts, including home phone, work phone, cell phone, and e-mail address. The city currently mails out approximately 53,000 water bill statements monthly. A review of these records revealed that a large number of accounts do not contain a phone number or an e-mail address. There are also thousands of phone numbers listed in the database that are no longer in service and need to be updated. Having current information on record enables the city to contact the customer if there are any service issues on the account. Providing the city with multiple channels of communication will serve to enhance the customer service experience. Thanks to the Information Services Webmaster for the revisions.
Fire Department and Marine Safety Division Receive Fireman’s Fund Grant
In September 2009, Marine Safety Division and Fire Department received $42,450 in grant funding from Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company and SullivanCurtisMonroe Insurance Services. This funding will be used for the purchase of rescue and emergency medical equipment and wildland firefighting boots. The Marine Safety Division and the Fire Department have immediate needs for these items and, with recent budget reductions, are increasingly difficult to obtain. The Fire Department annually responds to wildland incidents. Because of recent equipment failures, it was determined that the boots currently worn by firefighters on wildland fires are inadequate to function in this capacity. With the grant funding, the City will be able to purchase this essential equipment. In doing so, the Fire Department will be better equipped, protected, and safe while responding to this type of emergency. Since 2004, Fireman’s Fund has donated more than $23 million in funding to over 1,400 different fire departments across the country.
Tsunami Information
On Tuesday, September 29, 2009, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake occurred off the coast of Samoa. As a result of the earthquake, a large tsunami was generated which struck the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. Later in the day, at 3:05 PM, a tsunami advisory was issued for the West Coast of the United States from the California-Mexico border to the Oregon-Washington border with anticipated wave heights ranging from 20-65 cm and an estimated time of arrival of 9:05 PM. Though waves of this size would not cause widespread devastation as was seen in Samoa, they could cause minor flooding in low-lying areas and dangerous currents in the harbors and along the shoreline.
After the advisory was received, the city’s EOC was activated to Level 1 (monitoring). A planning meeting was held with representatives from Police, Fire, Marine Safety, Public Information, and Public Works present, and a conference call with representatives from all of the Orange County coastal cities and the County Emergency Manager occurred at approximately 4:00 PM. Based on information received during the conference call, the decision was made to confirm that the State beaches along with businesses and residents on the beach side of PCH were notified of the advisory. Marine Safety kept additional officers at the beach and the Police, Fire, and Public Works departments were available to assist if necessary. The City Administrator and City Council were also kept apprised of the situation by the Police and Fire Chiefs. The EOC remained open and in a monitoring mode until 10:00 PM. Marine Safety officers reported that no unusual activity was observed in the water.
Residents are encouraged sign up for AlertOC notifications. Registered residents will receive any emergency notifications sent out via AlertOC. To register, go to: www.surfcity-hb.org, click on “Sign Up for AlertOC” under the “What’s New” column.
National Information Literacy Awareness Month 2009
In a time when we’re bombarded with more information than ever before, when any internet user is able to mix facts, misinformation, rumors and opinions and then broadcast them around the world, the need for information literacy is more important than ever. Information literacy is the term for the skills needed to acquire, collate, and evaluate information, to separate accurate, useful information from the background noise of opinion, advocacy and rumor.
Places like universities and libraries already help their users to critically evaluate what they hear and read, but to succeed in the 21st century everyone will need strong information literacy skills. To highlight the importance of critical thinking in the Information Age, the president of the United States has proclaimed October National Information Literacy Information Month. The president addresses institutions like the library when he says, “An informed and educated citizenry is essential to the functioning of our modern democratic society, and I encourage educational and community institutions across the country to help Americans find and evaluate the information they seek, in all its forms.” As an important and ongoing part of its work, the library continues to help people find the current, accurate and useful information they need to be informed citizens of the 21st century.
