The berm is down…yahoo, the berm is down. (Or is it?)

People looking from the pier were excited Friday evening when they saw that the berm was down. On a second glance, in the dimishing light, however it appreared to be much higher at the eastern end of the beach; next to the jetty.
John Child, an out of town visitor who is quite familiar with Seal Beach said, “I’m pretty sure this is earlier than usual to take it down and with a storm scheduled for this weekend they probably decided to leave at least a little protection next to the jetty just in case there are some big swells.”
The protection the berm gives to the homeowners on Seal Way has been a great benefit since its beginning. It used to be that the berm went up in October and came down in May. A few years ago that changed and it now goes up in November and comes down in April. This year, apparently at the request of homeowners, it is coming down in March.
While it is nice to have an open view of the Pacific we’ll all hold our collective breaths for a few weeks that there isn’t a late winter storm that floods the waterfront homes on the east side of the pier.
I was really thinking that they just hadn’t finished with the berm removal. Especially since the beach is so deep down that way. If anything they probably should have started the opposite way as traditionally the houses closest to the pier are the ones hit by the stormy waters

As usual, glad to see that reason prevailed and allowed us to see our beautiful coast once again. Hats off to the City for taking note of the citizens request and making their requests so.
