Today was supposed to be warmer….it isn’t. What a surprise the weatherman was wrong!
Two weeks ago …without warning, the homes on Seal Way were ALMOST …INUNDATED. Water up to the second steps on the porches.
“Lake Seal Beach” was 1/2 mile long. From the pier to the jetty. Then it subsided and the city improved the “berm” and furiously pumped water back into the sea.
Then the residents relaxed until…..the CBS truck showed back up in the beach parking lot. I’ve spoken to those residents and they say while the TV truck being parked on the beach lot all night with their bright light on the first few homes is….. a little “ghoulish”…it is sometimes the only way they know they are in trouble.
Anyhow, this week they dodged a bullet and were just starting to relax when they were told to expect up to 8 inches of rain next week. OK…but will it come with big surf, they wondered?
The National Weather Service says there is an unusual amount of rain scheduled for the coast and lots of snow for the local mountains unless a warmer low pressure systems joins the ones coming from the north.
All due to start Sunday night and we can expect more than two months supply in five days!
“What’s Up” wants all our neighbors to know WE DON’T WANT TO PRINT a story about your houses getting swamped. When this storm is over we want to see Seal Way just as it is today.
When Rush got out of a Honolulu hospital last week the Drs said his chest pains had nothing to do with heart disease. Many of us are not sure Rush even has a heart?
Limbaugh was quick to point out — on his way out of the hospital —at a hastily put together news conference, that he “…doesn’t think there is one single thing wrong with the U.S. health system.”
Good for you Rush. Most people making $400 million a year also don’t seem to have any problems getting the service they need.
However Rush, lets suppose you really worked hard for a living and didn’t make $400 million a year. And didn’t choose to live in a state that had zero state taxes.
Lets suppose you were just a regular fat 57 year old with a history of drug addiction, back problems, and “undiagnosed” chest pains and had a job that paid about $36,000 a year….or less.
Chances are you couldn’t even get health insurance.
Rush you are what’s called a fat cat…who wants to keep all the other cats skinny and without health insurance.
Thank goodness there are a lot of Americans with more empathy for their less fortunate neighbors.

A Long Beach man played with pennies and went home a millionaire at Pechanga, after striking a $1,061,225.26 Jackpot on an Indiana Jones slot machine at 10:48 a.m. this morning. The devoted Pechanga player knew he had hit a jackpot, but it took him a minute to realize just how large it was.
“I was kind of in a daze,” said the lucky player, who has been coming to Pechanga since 2002. Asked what he will do with his winnings he replied, “I’m going to save my mother’s house.”
There has been a jackpot frenzy at the Pechanga Resort & Casino with the Long Beach resident becoming the fourth big winner in just over two months at the largest casino in the Western USA. An Anaheim resident hit it big on the Mystery of the Mask machine for a whopping $678,367.00 in late September. Another jackpot of $799,041.37 was won by a Chino Hills woman on a Wizard of Oz progressive in early September. A $500,000 Bally Quick Hit winner also hit in late July.
“Pechanga has more slots than any other casino in California and far more than any in Las Vegas,” said Pechanga VP of Slots Buddy Frank. “It stands to reason that we also have more jackpots than anyone else. When someone wins a once-in-a-lifetime jackpot, it creates an excitement on the floor with both our guests and our Team Members.”
Pechanga Resort & Casino is located in the Inland Empire, in the Southern California Wine Country of Temecula Valley.
Pechanga has superstar concerts; a comedy club; world title boxing events; three clubs and lounges, including Silk, the 2nd largest nightclub in Southern California; more than 100,000 square feet of convention/meeting space; and the new 18-hole Journey at Pechanga, which has been rated as one of the best new golf courses of 2008. As the largest casino in the Western United States, Pechanga is perfect for a romantic weekend or just a daytrip with happening nightlife to make for an exciting getaway.
This year’s new cars have some surprising mileage numbers. 8, 9, 10 and 11 miles to the gallon!
The EPA has released their annual fuel economy guide. There are lots of autos with greatly improved mileage. Alas, there are still a few that don’t seem to get the message or cannot improve their mileage number without compromising their goal?
A Chevy van that gets 13 mpg IS NOT the worst by any measure. Not surprisingly most of the cars with bad numbers seem to be aimed at an audience of Marie Antoniette’s …. Those with a sort of “Let ’em eat cake” attitude.
When discussing the 2010 mileage report EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said: “Every year, consumers use the Fuel Economy Guide to find clean, efficient, cost-effective vehicles that meets their needs and their budgets. It’s an easy, accessible resource for everyone, and helps us cut harmful pollution from the air, and save money for American drivers.”
Fuel-efficient models come in all types and sizes, so consumers can save thousands of dollars over a vehicle’s lifetime without sacrificing performance. Model year 2010 fuel economy leaders include a wide range of hybrid models, from compact cars to sport-utility vehicles. “Fuel economy is about both saving energy and saving money,” said Energy Secretary Steven Chu. “Buying fuel efficient vehicles – like the many hybrid technologies featured in this year’s Fuel Economy Guide – helps limit carbon pollution, lessen our dependence on foreign oil, and reduce driving costs for American families.”
Each vehicle listing in the Fuel Economy Guide provides an estimated annual fuel cost. The estimate is calculated based on the vehicle’s miles per gallon (mpg) rating and national estimates for annual mileage and fuel prices. The online version of the guide allows consumers to input their local gasoline prices and typical driving habits to receive a personalized fuel cost estimate.
Fuel efficiency is important for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change. One of the most important things consumers can do to reduce their contribution to climate change is to buy a vehicle with better fuel economy.
The Fuel Economy Guide continues to be available to mobile users (fueleconomy.gov/m), and is readily accessible from a mobile device, smart phone, or personal digital assistant (or PDA).

Deep in the southern part of the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau, there is a Tibetan Autonomous Region where 99% of the populations are of Tibetan descent. Tibetan is the native language and Buddhism is embodied in the local culture.
A California woman, Lynn Velez, a friend of “Whats Up in Seal Beach” who lives in Hong Kong, has responded to the plight of the needs of these young women and girls. Lynn is well known by us and her hard work and honesty are above reproach. She takes absolutely no compensation for her efforts. (In fact she and her husband are large donors to the project both in work and cash.)
Rosie cheeks even in spring weather. Winter can be -25 F
The girls come from very poor families who cannot afford to look after them. Some of the girls are from families who “gave” them to other families as house-maids to pay-off generational loans or to receive food and cash so the rest of the family could survive. Even though it is required by law to send children to school for 9 years, many of these nomadic families do not value formal education and instead keep their girls at home to work because of necessity.
The SGH is fully “endorsed” by the Local and Provincial Chinese Government… unfortunately that doesn’t include financial help. but even though its only partially built the Seng Girls Home is already becoming a sanctuary for these Tibetan girls. A school is currently being built; however, there are other necessities that are needed. Here is the very modest “Wish List” for the Seng Girls Home .
–Bathroom and Toilet. $12,650. At present they use an outdoor privvy. Winter temps approach minus 25 degrees- – THIS MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE THE FIRST SNOW! Right now they bath once or twice a year- – only in the summer when water is warmer. Likewise their only blanket is washed once a year. It’s heavy material and needs two or three days to dry..again, only in summer.
Here is the toilets we need to replace...
-Kitchen-$4,500. The kitchen is a simple two burner gas outlet and several large pots. The girls are happy with these because they are eating regularly but more girls are coming every day and the kitchen must be enlarged. not enough funds to complete it.
Seeing the beginnings of their sleeping quarters
Completion of new Dormitories – $12,100 The 40 girls currently live in the main house but will move into dormitories once completed. The goal is to eventually accommodate 100 girls.
Capital Fund for Education–$20,800 – This is for 20 computers, printers, a library with bookshelves, teacher’s resources and a desk and chair for each child. The girls are learning English as well as Tibetan and the Chinese are not insisting on Chinese. Even though they just have rudimentary tools they are excelling at their studies. And they LOVE IT!
Anything you can give, $5, $20, or more – – will be of MONUMENTAL help to these girls. Of course if you can find a BIG donor that will also be very helpful but don’t think that $5 isn’t important. It is.
Further Information: Simply contact Lynn Velez at lrvelez@hotmail.com or call +86 13603012442.
To donate send your check to ‘Friends of Hong Kong Charities Inc’.

The Tibetan girls thank you for your support and we will have a website by Christmas so you can see the results!

A friend who knows how much I admire Tiger Woods recently sent me photos of his home in Isleworth, Florida near Orlando. See Photos at: http://officespam.chattablogs.com/archives/2006/06/pictures-of-tiger-woods-house.html
It is, quite naturally, an exceptionally beautiful home. An entry with a phenomenal staircase, a living room with a custom 30 foot couch, 6 bathrooms, 5 marble bathrooms, 2 ½ baths AND 22 TVs!
This 9,000 foot estate overlooks one quarter of a mile of a crystal white sand beach and has a 90 foot infinity pool. Its within walking distance of 3 world renowned golf courses.
The lighting system is so spectacular that if you were allowed to rent it for a weekend you could create your own ambience.
Nevertheless, while I would grant Tiger Woods anything he wants in life because he’s done so much good for those less fortunate and is generally a very class act among celebrities, I questioned if this was really Tiger’s camping grounds. What do you think? Go to: http://www.snopes.com/photos/architecture/tigerwoods.asp
